Kansas City, Mo.-based Smith Electric Vehicle Corp. which designs, produces and sells zero-emission electric trucks, signed its 10-year lease for a 90,000-square-foot property at 275-295 Locust Ave. in the Port Morris section of the Bronx in August which it intends to renovate and equip as a manufacturing, service and distribution facility.
Rent for the space was not disclosed, however, the company said it incurred $300,000 in closing costs in connection with the lease. Additionally, Smith Electric said it expects to spend roughly $2.2 million on the facility, $1.5 million on improvements and equipment and $700,000 to extend its infrastructure.
Smith Electric worked closely with Empire State Development and city agencies to set up the new facility. And the firm’s entry into the Bronx was supported by a number of local politicians and community groups. The Bronx facility is the company’s second such outpost in the United States. It also has a plant in Newcastle, in the United Kingdom.
